Review: Beginners Modern Calligraphy Class at Tea and Crafting

Do you love handwriting? Does calligraphy fascinate you? Do you find spending quality time in a calm, colourful atmosphere with as much tea as you like charming? If you follow Tea and Crafting’s course calendar, you may find some classes to meet your expectations. And yes, there is plenty of cake, too.

I took the beginner’s workshop in modern calligraphy at Tea and Crafting last night. It lasts 2.5 hours and it apparently is enough time to learn the basics of modern calligraphy. We had a chance to learn about the calligraphy tools, how to hold the pen, pressure techniques and how to write each lower case and upper case letter.

The worksheet is neat, elegant and useful.

Our adorable teacher Susie is the founder of the luxury stationery brand À L’aise. She is a self-thought calligrapher and it’s clear that she loves teaching as much as she loves writing. And she is good at it. By the time the 2.5 hrs lesson finished, I felt fully equipped to continue learning calligraphy. There were many people in the class but Susie was able to walk by and help everyone. At the end of the class, we were handed 1 pot of handmade black ink which Susie’s father produces, 1 pen holder and 1 nib. Susie brought various nibs, practice worksheets and ink pots for us to buy if we like to. These are quality materials and I grabbed some.

The workshop is £55.00. Since the materials are included, the teacher is great and the workshop includes unlimited tea and coffee, it was worth it.

I really find calligraphy amazing and since everybody tells me that I have beautiful handwriting, I decided to take this class. Before that, I took Susie’s Beginners Brush Lettering Calligraphy course as well and it has given me the confidence enough to keep trying brush lettering at home. I recommend these classes to everyone who wants to enter the world of artistic handwriting. I’m looking forward to joining a follow-up workshops of Susie’s!
